Instructors

Our Association expects the highest standards from our Instructors. They will have to complete a host of assessments in their abilities of understanding the Wing Chun Art. We believe that our Instructors should be able to communicate with their gained knowledge and also to be able to demonstrate their teachings. This means that they are capable of sharing what they have learnt and to be patient with their own students.

Our Instructors understands that this title does not give them prestige, but an honour to represent one of the most famous Martial Art Disciplines and so a great responsibility is bestowed on them to make sure that the Spirit of Wing Chun will continue to be successful in the generations to come. To do that we must continuously understand that we are also humble servants of the Art and can not be selfish in using the title to inflate our own egos.

A Sifu is still a humble student

Shaun Brown

Shaun (left) started training in 1991. He is still training, but is often abroad in Kosovo working as a body guard for Diplomats. He often tells stories of other martial art experts/operatives he has met in his field and has said how proud he was when they are impressed by Wing Chun's approach. He is easily approachable and we often call him the gentle giant as he was always so willing to share his knowledge with his classmates despite how powerful he is if he really did use his skills. He is a fantastic combatant (an ex red beret and weapons expert), and has a great stamina for training. He is one person who has true life and death experiences, and when he tells us some of his stories we sometimes wonder if he was crazy or was he really that courageous, but we know that he has no need to lie. The senior students are often in awe when he holds a class and we are all glad he is on our side.

Mathew Bates

Mathew started training from around 1996. At the time he had only finnished studying and on course in search of a career. From a very academic background he utilised his skills in dissecting the mechanics of Wing Chun. It is often said that he can memorise combinations with ease. He has also said that by studying with this Association he has developed great confidence in his life.

Darren Titmas

Darren is another great athlete who has trained in other styles such as Muay Thai in Thailand, and also Ninjitsu. He joined in year 1999 and we are happy to say that Wing Chun has won him over. Darren is another who has trained in Hong Kong and has life membership in both Ip Man Wing Chun Athletic Associationa and Ip Chun Wing Chun Academy. In year 2004 he stayed in Hong Kong training intensively for 6 months and received his Ip Man Wing Chun Athletic Association Instructor Certificate. You will find Darren always training and trying to better himself week to week. In class he is a great help to his fellow colleagues and is always willing to share his gained knowledge. If Darren ever chooses the path to have his own club one day I am most positive that he will have a great following.
Darren is based in Southend and does take on private students.

Andrew Francis and Emma Hatley

Emma and Andrew (husband and wife) joined Chelmsford in year 2000.
Andrew is a charimastic and pleasant instructor. He is liked by all his class mates who find him very approachable and will always have time for their questions. Andrew is also the Chief Examiner in our gradings board.
Emma is surprising. She has a quiet exterior and seemed as though she wouldn't last in training for that long, but she has perservered and has shown that she is just as tough inside as the rest of us.
Both Emma and Andrew are permanent members of Ip Man Wing Chun Athletic Associationa and Ip Chun Wing Chun Academy. These two are a great team and those who train with them will go a long way.

Andrew is based in Chelmsford and does take on private students

Michael Warwood
Michael is a talented individual who has been with our Association for since 1998 and has proved himself to be a natural. He has also trained in Hong Kong for 6 months under Grand Master Ip Chun and has a lifetime membership with Ip Man Wing Chun Athletic Associationa and Ip Chun Wing Chun Academy. Unfortunately his training was cut short due to the SARS scare. Michael is now a stunts man and to his credit has appeared in Batman Begins. His career takes him away to frequently, but his heart is still with this Association. A very quick learner and is just as quick in achieving an ability to teach. We are proud that he does assist this Association when ever he can.

Paul Calvert (Braintree)
Paul has past experience other martial arts including Thai Boxing. He has a demanding career being the manager of his security team in an international establishment.
He has a strong personality and has proved himself a very quick learner and a true believer in getting the best from his students. He is currently teaching in Braintree.

John Cheung (no relation to Sifu Kwok)
(Cambridge)
John Cheung has trained in Fencing before moving onto Wing Chun in the year 2001 when he joined a local club. After 3 years of research he felt that he learnt all that he could from this club and decided that he must uproot to find more answers. After many hours of researching on the Internet he came across Sifu Kwok Cheung teaching in Southend On Sea. After the initial contact via email Sifu Kwok Cheung later welcomed John at his school in 2005. John continues to study with Sifu Kwok Cheung and has had opportunities to also meet and train with Grandmaster Ip Chun.

Atilla Toth
Atilla is a Hungarian who studied WT (Leung Ting Lineage) in his native country before coming to England. He joined our Association in Chelmsford in 2003. This is one guy who works very hard not just in Wing Chun, but in overcoming the language barrier to get to where he is now. You will find Atilla a very disciplined instructor who always tries to arrange his work schedule around his training. Members in Chelmsford are now benefitting from his expertise and willingness to teach. He is now on the final stage of his forms learning the Baht Cham Doa.

Ashley Rowan
Ashley joined our Shoebury branch in 2001. He gained his instructorship in 2006. His experience in Wing Chun also includes twice visiting Hong Kong and one of those times for a period of 6 months. You will find Ashley to be very energetic, dynamic, and focused in his training. At this moment in time (2007) he is training for his stuntsman course and does not have the time to teach. However, he is a regular in both Shoebury and Southend.
